What source do I drink from?
It is important to know my sources. This doesn’t just apply to water. It is especially true for mental nourishment. What thoughts am I occupying my brain with?
Wrong thoughts are harmful, good thoughts are refreshing.
The thoughts in my books and on my blog come from my own experiences and from the experiences of people who have inspired me.
That’s why I want to give you an insight into me and my career. I want you to find out what traces life has left in me and what traces I have left in others.
My life is characterized by highs and lows. During the highs, I learned to enjoy life’s successes and to be grateful. In the lows, I learned to grow in resilience and to recognize signs of hope. The highs and lows have made me who I am today, Mario Brühlmann.
I was born on 14.12.1951 into a family of entrepreneurs in Appenzell. As a child, I learned that self-employment doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. and that all family members have to work in the business – even the little ones. That didn’t do me any harm.
But in 1962 I also had to learn how quickly you can lose everything material. With a second business – a small textile factory – the family sank into bankruptcy with a total loss. I had to learn to live in poverty. This experience was hard and humiliating. However, it was extremely helpful for my later work as a management consultant for small and medium-sized enterprises. I was able to learn to look at difficulties from a new perspective.
My degree in business administration and subsequent further training to become an IT manager, HR manager and Master of Business Administration EMBA gave me the tools to become a manager, entrepreneur and management consultant. As an executive, I worked at management level in companies operating throughout Switzerland and worldwide. I worked as an IT manager, CFO, marketing manager and HR manager. As an entrepreneur, I founded several companies. And as a management consultant, I have supported numerous companies through difficult phases and change processes.
In addition to my consultancy work in Switzerland, I was involved in development projects in Romania, Moldova, Albania, Bulgaria, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Vietnam for over thirty years. I helped to set up companies and create jobs in all of these countries. Thousands of SMEs are now operating independently and creating tens of thousands of jobs. Helping people to help themselves works.
In addition to my professional activities, I was also co-founder and president or member of the board of trustees of several foundations. These included, for example, the Christliche Ostmission COM Worb Foundation, the YMCA Nidau Foundation, the BPN Foundation, Berne, and the ROMCOM Oradea Foundation.
Since my official “retirement”, I have devoted myself increasingly to helping young people find a suitable career and trained professionals develop into outstanding employees.
Finally, the most important thing. In 1971, I had a spiritual experience that strongly influenced the rest of my career. I was approached by cheerful young Christians on the street and inspired to put my Christian faith on a very personal and practical footing with God. This deep bond continues to this day – through all the good and difficult times. It is still a fundamental source of inspiration for my activities as a counselor and mentor.
